Traveling In Style

the trip back to the midwest is looming closer and closer. there will be lots of driving, hugging and catching up. for that reason, we are taking it easy this Labor Day and not hitting Bumbershoot this year. instead i’m prepping my PB for the trip and thinking about any other little luxuries that might make the long plane ride that much more bearable. i detest airports (partly because they smell like sanitizing liquid and jet fuel). the PB is all dressed up with an extra battery and headphone splitter in its pack. it’s been a little while since i’ve flown (i boycotted after leaving a job that required travel) and i am now re-thinking my carry-on strategy. it used to be that i had a small carryon laptop bag loaded with files and a big bottle of water. my old machine was a teensy Dell C400 (primarily because it was the smallest and lightest, making it a winner for dragging through airport security). i need to find the perfect bag to hold both my laptop and other necessities. the bag i have now is from Macally and admittedly was an impulse buy. at the time, there weren’t any decent bags out there and i settled. i’m thinking it’s time to replace it with something better looking and more functional. i’m thinking perhaps something like this with the PB safely tucked away inside a snug sleeve, but i’m not sure if that will be too much to carry.

the other thought i’ve been tossing around in the last couple days is purchasing a new computer. we have two right now, but the first is a little old. i had thought about upgrading it myself, but the fact remains that the processer is and always will be a G3. with the release of the new iMacs i am suddenly motivated to make a move and get Mark a new machine for the music stuff he’s always working on.

and guess what? after two years of using an uber crappy phone, i finally got a new one today. the old one was a Samsung and despite the fact that it served its purpose, the thing could never hold a charge and the car charger burned out after a couple months of use. so i decided to indulge in a Motorola V300. it’s not the fanciest phone ever, but i am not a PDA/phone type of girl. i’ve tested out the camera and while the resolution is nothing to write home about, it does the trick. i’d post some test pics, but the dogs were not willing subjects.

lastly, i am going to buy a copy of Dreamweaver for home. don’t let me get started on the cost of software and how unfair it can be. Macromedia’s license policy clearly states that you are welcome to install your single user version on two machines (supposedly a home and a work machine). Dreamweaver comes loaded with both Mac and PC versions. however, (isn’t there always a however?) you can only install two copies on the same type of machine meaning. meaning two PCs or two Macs. that’s such crap! how many workplaces do you know of that are Mac based? exactly. how many design-type people do you know work on Macs? grrrr.

oh, wait, one more thing. oh to be a kid in the Portland area these days and have this kind of awesome opportunity!
