The RIAA Makes Me Puke

Posted on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 in sonica

i usually try to keep my rants to myself, but every now and then i can’t help it. if i have to hear another whining record exec go on about how downloading music from the internet is not only hurting the artists but is the main reason CD sales are so slow i just might join the RIAA to change things from the inside, man. ok, not really. as if the majors care about the artists? come on now, they care about the profit and if the artists releases aren’t selling, their wallets aren’t getting any fatter. there are no music listeners, only the demographic and the market and the big fat ROI (that’s Return On Investment baby). did they ever maybe consider that the reason sales are down because the music they peddle for the most part sucks? or that there are alot of bands that are sticking with smaller labels because the whole ridiculousness of the major label game is too much for them? just ask Steve Albini and other excerpts from Maximum Rock N Roll #133 courtesy of A Rancid Amoeba. and Lars Ulrich please save the speeches and the court outfits, as Mark pointed out to me, where would your band be without kids that traded your demo tapes back in the day? that’s what i thought.

  1. Not to mention the fact that CD’s are constantly going up in price compared to a $8.99 vinyl LP back in the day. It costs less to manufacture a CD than an LP…. 16 fuggin’ dollars for a CD at Harmony House is crazy.

  2. i can’t bring myself to pay $16.99 for a CD. i try to support the smaller labels and the independent record stores. it’s a small thing, but it’s something.
