The Girl In The Bubble

I’m quite tired, and yet I am waiting to leave for the Tractor for the Angels of Light / Akron | Family show. I saw them (i.e. Michael Gira) a few years back at the old Fenix Underground (before the earthquake caused it to move locations). I remember getting a strange dusty prairie feeling from it, but in a slightly off-kilter way. I have been enjoying the recent album The Angels of Light Sing ‘Other People’.

In addition to submitting a review on the show, I’m also making a first real attempt at shooting it as well. First attempt armed with an actual plan on how I’m going to shoot. A PLAN!!

In other warm and fuzzy music news, we picked up all three of the latest Cure reissues: Pornography, Faith and Seventeen Seconds. I’m excited to have them, but almost as excited as being that much closer to the reissue of Disintegration. One can only hope that they will tour the US again soon.

Planning on seeing Blanche at The Crocodile Cafe on June 25th to hear what the fuss is about firsthand. Is it true what they say about six degrees of separation? Dave Feeny is a mere two from me, which makes Jack White and Loretta Lynn three. And now that I think about it, my friend Brian interviewed Nick Cave, that’s two! I’m SO close!

In other new music release news: New Order’s The Siren’s Call, which for some reason I had thought was already out. And Oscillations From The Anti-Sun, a 3 CD and DVD set from Stereolab chocked full of rarities, b-sides and promo videos. My suggestion would be to grab it now while it still contains 8 stickers of each original EP artwork. Raise your hand if you’re sick of hearing the Caesar’s Jerk It Out. *waives hand and yells ‘me! me!’* Less annoying, but still getting on the old nerves is the Kings of Leon song Molly’s Chambers featured in the latest ad campaign for VW. You know how those VW people love to market to … well, me. Damnit. It worked. But I swear it wasn’t from the Orb commercial or the Nick Drake Pink Moon one either.

And speaking of Kings of Leon, I saw them open for U2 this past Sunday. My overall consensus: quite a spectacle. I had never seen U2, had really liked everything up until Achtung Baby! but sort of fizzled out afterward. I also had never seen them live and thought it best to do it in comfy, early-show style (did I mention the cushy seats and free food?). It was quite luxurious. There was a full buffet and free drinks. First impression as they emerged on their circular, lighted stage? Bono is small. They played the songs you would expect to hear, but I must say it was difficult for me to get super excited. The show was elaborate with screens of huge lights rolling up and down, displaying different images, grabbing random audience members and bringing them on stage. A spectacle indeed. Don’t get me wrong, they did sound really good. They are U2 after all.

More to come ….
