Say Yes! To Michigan

Posted on Sunday, January 11, 2004 in thoughts

‘Say Yes! To Michigan …. say yes! yes! yes! … say YES!’ it makes me laugh just thinking about it. this song was used in an ad campaign promoting tourism to the state. for all i know, it’s still in use. you would think you were being promised an orgasm upon crossing the state line. i promise you, nothing could be further from the truth. you can, however, kiss meatless meals goodbye!

[in any restaurant]
moi: i’d like just the eggs and toast please.
garcon: that’s it? you don’t want any ham, canadian bacon (covert ham), sausage links, sausage patty, country fried steak, bacon, steak or a ground beef patty?
moi: uh, no thanks.
garcon: -disbelief- well … okay then.

this is all really a segue into the fact that it’s sunday and i have been randomly wandering online and came across a site called Michigan Native. i immediately went straight to the page on the Michigan Accent Pronunciation Guide and had a good laugh. i’m not sure if this is only funny to people who have lived there, but i’m guessing you must know someone from the state (since lots of us flee) that this applies to! the longer i live away from the old mitten, the more i notice the accent when relatives visit. and i do have friends that say “melk”, “pellow” and one other that escapes me right now (but i am certain it will come to me after i publish). talk to the mitten, man.
