Sadcore Rules

i received an email from Mark this morning with the subject line of “i feel all warm and fuzzy inside”. since this is unusual coming from him in the midst of a work day, i knew there must be some music-related news inside. and lo and behold (no pun intended), Low is set to release a box set called A Lifetime Of Temporary Relief: 10 Years of B-Sides & Rarities on July 20th. per their site it is already available for pre-order on Amazon.com (do you really need me to link you there?) and is described as:

“an exhaustive compilation of B-Sides, rarities, outtakes and demos from the past 10 years of Low’s career. Featuring more than 53 songs assembled by the band, this box set contains 3 audio discs and 1 DVD. A Lifetime of Temporary Relief includes Low’s first bedroom recordings (1993), all the way through to vinyl-only tracks from their recent CD, Trust (2003). Combined with a DVD that includes 11 Low videos, live footage and a series of documentaries, along with notes and images in a 32-page booklet compiled by the band, this box set truly encapsulates all that is Low.”

we can’t wait! the full tracklist is also available on their official Chairkickers website. with three discs and a DVD, it is definitely something to add to the collection. i couldn’t help but wax sentimental over the opportunities i’ve had to see them live over the years. the first time was at Alvin’s Twilight Bar, the best place to see a show in Detroit (or at least it used to be). they were opening for His Name Is Alive and came out to sell their merch and give away stickers post their set. it was amazing. i can clearly remember being amazed by the beauty of Below & Above above the din of conversation and wafting cigarette smoke. since that time, we’ve seen them at Bumbershoot with baby in tow (Alan saying “Please don’t report us to child services” as the baby kept toddling out onto the stage) and at the Tractor Tavern where we were packed like sardines in a smoky tin coffin. and although we haven’t seen them in a couple of years, i still managed to spot Zach playing bass for The Dirty Three on what may have been their last tour (or at least Warren eluded to it).

Sigh. July 20th can’t arrive soon enough. Add one more item to my list of music to buy!

  1. Ah, I’m looking forward to that as well. Peanut Butter Toast and American Bandstand is among my all-time favorite Low songs.

In other Low news, I was at a bbq with their nanny, Starfire, the other night (the plus side of living in Minnesota!). He mentioned that on the drive down from Duluth to Minneapolis he got a phone call from Alan. He and Mimi were at the hospital with baby number 2 on the way, like imminently. Need to check back in to find out if it was a boy or girl and how everything went.

  2. yes, do tell! i had heard they were expecting another baby. hopefully all went well. one day we might just have to head out to Minn. when we drove through on the way here, we thought it looked cool and would be someplace we’d want to visit.

  3. We have an update, courtesy of Starfire. Dang, that’s one very big baby!

  4. Whoa! I’m sending well wishes their way. Will you be at the Green Man Festival to see them (and Willie Nelson)?

  5. I *really* want to go up for Green Man…to see Low, Mason Jennings, and assorted friends…but we’re down to one car now, and the husband works weekends. So we’ll see. But yawl really should come out for a visit one of these days.
