NPR : Mass. High Court Strikes Down Gay Marriage Ban

Posted on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 in thoughts

yesterday NPR reported on the fact that the Massachucetts Supreme Court found that a law banning same-sex marriages is unconstitutional. i don’t typically like to rave about information, as much as pass it on, but i can’t help it.

Nov. 18, 2003 — The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court rules that a law banning same-sex marriages is unconstitutional. The four-to-three opinion says gay couples are legally entitled to marry under the state constitution. But the ruling stops short of allowing marriage licenses to be issued to the seven gay couples who had challenged the law.

they aired short comments from both sides of the political “wedge” (it’s interesting that the life quality and rights of certain human beings are considered nothing more than a ‘wedge issue’ for the 2004 election). those opposed to it talked about marriage being a ’sacred union between a man and a woman’ and the need for children to be raised by mother and father family. it’s also always interesting to me that i never hear these people talk about children being raised by two people who love them and provide a secure environment for them. according to statistics, the heteros aren’t doing all that well at it. sacred to who? to the people that are making the financial, legal and emotional committment and i just cannot understand how it matters whether you are two women, two men or a man and woman? i have also heard murmurs of the fact that gay relationships .. well, just don’t last. ahem …. cough … hollywood … las vegas stripper drive thru weddings ….

sheesh. aren’t there more important things out there to be uptight about? for example, i don’t know, maybe the rising cost of healthcare and the disaster that is the HMO, the appalling unemployment statistics, strengthening the infrastructure of this country, paying teachers more to educate young minds, etc.

okay, i’m done now. all better. well, sort of.
