Musical Rambling
i have been feeling very muscially sentimental lately (as is evident from my current Sonica list). i love all of the different ways to adore music. i love it when you buy a new CD and from the very first listen you love every minute of it and can listen to it again and again. especially when that artist/band becomes something you can depend on. or when you buy something, but you aren’t really keen on it right away. you might put it on a shelf for a little while, then come back to it later to find that it is really special. some music is special for the moment i listened to it in. there are many bands/artists i would buy anything from and many that i buy random stuff from (instead of buying groceries). stuff like a clear CD single from Sleater-Kinney, the Cocteau Twins Box Set, Stereolab 12″ and the Supergrass Grace single on pink vinyl (okay, it was free!). i mentioned in a previous post that Mark has several bands he will buy anything from, no matter good or bad as soon as it’s released (The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, etc.). i have a similar problem, but not quite as severe. 5 examples would be:
- Neko Case
- Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds (did i need the soundtrack to Ghosts of The Civil Dead? it’s just creeeeepy)
- The Cure (thankfully, Mark has this covered with his assortment of rare vinyl, b-sides and other stuff)
- Bjork (even though i went through a selling period for some of the singles … which i now regret)
- The Dirty Three
feel free to comment on yours!
thinking about a band called Collection D’Arnell-Andrea, a French group based in Gien. their music is ethereal with chamber type orchestrations. the vocalist’s voice is often compared to both Lisa Gerard and Elizabeth Frasier (though their music is similar to Dead Can Dance and the Cocteau Twins only in that it is unique). they have not had distribution in the US for quite some time. their site says that their fifth release Viller-aux-Vents, with a theme of the 1914-1918 war, is being re-released by Priosnovenie. it’s one that i don’t have and is difficult to find.
perhaps i’ll make a nostalgic CD for myself of music from my detroit club days.
