Music Is My Boyfriend

Posted on Monday, February 7, 2005 in sonica

Pornographylook people, you might as face it … i’m going to be posting about The Cure as long as they are putting out music (mediocre or not). our CDs could use some shiny new replacements and these reissues have been the opportunity to retire the old ones. oh the horror that Disintegration won’t be out for what seems like an eternity.

so you can imagine our excitement (that would be mine and Mark’s) over the next set of reissues. Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography are set to be released sometime in April, chocked full of live releases previously unavailable on CD, demos and each including a 20 page booklet.

Hiddencameras last Friday, i headed over to KEXP to give a listen to The Hidden Cameras live in-studio because (as i may have mentioned before) Mark may be my husband, but music is my boyfriend. sadly, i hung out long enough to chat with the band briefly but not long enough to hear them play due to other committments. they had arrived almost an hour late because of issues at the border (the bane of many an in-studio). you would think they would fare a bit easier being from Toronto and all. i ended up hearing them play while driving in the car shortly afterward. the archived audio should be up on the KEXP website in a couple of days.

and i’m in LOVE with Max Richter’s The Blue Notebooks, beautiful and stark modern classical music. the album opens with text from Franz Kafka spoken over carefully chosen piano notes. he also uses text from Czeslaw Milosz, a nice memorium to the poet who sadly passed away last year. i was completely sucked in by the sound of an old typewriter. it reminded me of the hours i spent typing on just that kind as a kid, before my first electric typewriter (something i still prefer to a computer). the closest parallel i could draw would be Rachel’s. really, the music is hauntingly beautiful and so well thought out. almost as interesting is his diary on the website.

et maintenant, bon soir mes petites puces.
