Morbid Thoughts

Posted on Sunday, August 22, 2004 in shocktober, visual delights

went to see The Exorcist: The Beginning instead of seeing Garden State(which i will be seeing next weekend perhaps?). i have this unreasonable thing for horror movies. because of that i have to make certain concessions. there aren’t very many really good, really scary horror movies coming out these days so i have to lower my standards a bit to give everything a try. while The Exorcist was not the best movie i’ve ever seen, there were plenty of jump in your seat moments and even some disgusting enough to make me squirm a little. there’s just something about an inverted crucifix that will always give me the creeps. i really do love any movie with a good plot about the Catholic church/christianity vs. satan. for example, i still adore The Prince of Darkness … yep christianity and zombies. i can’t wait for Resident Evil to come out next month. the first one had some cheesy special effects, but it’s fun to watch Milla kick some butt. i’m ready for Shocktober.

speaking of which, we’re heading down to The Big Easy for Halloween this year to visit Dick, Diana and the Bunnygirl. my years of Halloween dedication are finally paying off. i’m looking to Diana to show us the secret local stuff. what to be, what to be. perhaps Jack and Sally?

favorite horror flicks of all time in no particular order:

1. Dawn Of the Dead: the best time you can hope to have at a mall
2. Day of the Dead (sensing a pattern here?)
3. House of Wax: Vincent Price was so good!
4. 28 Days Later: Cillian Murphy, the cutest zombie killer ever
5. Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things: oh Orville
6. Return Of The Living Dead
7. The Beyond: maggot rain, ew
8. Se7en: mediocre script, Brad Pitt’s annoying but it looks so cool!
9. Dead Alive: the answer to ‘What else did Peter Jackson direct?’ i kick ass for the lord
10. Motel Hell: i can’t help it

oh wait, there are just a few more!
11. My Bloody Valentine: Aaaaaxellll!
12. The Evil: came out in 1978 and scared the pants off me as a kid
13. Evil Dead: yes, yes, this is a given
14. Basket Case: tee-hee
15. Prince Of Darkness

George Romero has a new movie set to be released in 2005 called Land Of The Dead with Dennis Hopper rumored to have a lead role? that’s what UHM says. there, i said it. i read a web site called Upcoming Horror Movies.

  1. Post of the Living Dead

I have never really been that into horror movies, finding that most of them have a heavy accent on gross out moments at the expense of this little thing i like to call plot…. She even went to The Exorcist: The Beginning instead of Garden State the o…

  2. ooo! ooo! i remember House of Wax from when i was a kid. I stayed up late and watched it without anyone knowing. i had no idea what it was when i started watching, but then we only had three televisions at that time and one was french.

and then there was another Vincent Price movie where he cooked people and their dogs. i can’t remember which one that was. it also scared me.

and the first Exorcist scarred me for decades. i would hide behind the couch whenever ads came on for it. i couldn’t even talk about it until the mid-90’s when i finally watched it.

  3. that is, well, cute! er, i meant tough … tough and manly like … a Canadian!

  4. Garden State is a must. don’t pass it up again! tsk tsk.

  5. I love my Dad dearly, but he forced me to watch the first Exorcist with him when I was five. At that point I was still afraid of oompa loompas so you can imagine how much that messed me up. He also had a subscription to Fangoria magazine and would force us to look at it while explaining that movie magic gore didn’t much resemble the real world gore he saw on the job. Gee, thanks Dad.

When I was a bit older we all watched “Let’s Scare Jessica to Death“, possibly one of the all-time worst movies ever made. It was supposed to be a horror film, but we rolling around on the floor laughing, it was so bad. Maybe so bad it’s actually worth watching.

And lastly, last summer I made it to a Japanese film fest in NYC. It was a good cross selection of genres. The first night happened to be Friday the 13th, so it was horror movie night. Both “2LDK” and “Wild Zero” were brilliant. But you really need to see “Bio Zombie“….Hong Kong’s answer to George Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead.

Long-winded enough, eh? Must be the coffee.

  6. my sister claims she was scarred from watching the Nightmare On Elm Street movies because she had dreams about Freddy afterward (which she of course thought were real).

i’ll definitely have to check those out! thanks for the recommendations.

    mmmmmm….coffee.
