Late Weekend Rambling

Posted on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 in thoughts

this past weekend, Mark delighted me with a bout of spontaneity and decided to drive out to the Big Four ice caves. the drive is relatively short (only about 1.5 hours) and beautiful at that. we packed the dogs in the car, picked up my sister and Heff and headed out.

there is an extremely easy trail out that ends at the face of a mountain where avalanches have formed huge caves of ice. when you stand in front of the caves, a blast of icy cool mist blows over you. although there are signs posted everywhere on the dangers of entering the caves, each year people dare. the year before last there were three deaths as the caves are extremely unstable. the last time we had visited, the trail had been covered in about 3-4 feet of snow which made the trail out a bit more cumbersome. the dogs loved it. Primo is all terrain dog and has a zen-like quality to his navigating amongst big boulders and dirt. Penny was just enjoying the unfamiliar sights and sounds. Mark walked Primo to the bottom of the snowpile and he proceeded to roll on his back and slide through the snow with his tongue hanging out of the side of his mouth. it was a very relaxing day and we were all tired by the time we reached home.

the next day, i drove to West Seattle to spend some time with my friend Celeste. we grabbed coffee and walked along the waterfront with a sun soaked view of downtown Seattle. i hadn’t seen her in awhile and it was nice to just walk along, catching up with each other’s lives.

and after that i headed home to a sparkling clean house, clean and laundry and an evening spent drinking tea and watching movies.
