Jeremy Roenick is an Ass

Posted on Monday, June 27, 2005 in thoughts

Typically, posts that are about sports and/or are just ranting don’t belong here (well, ranting without humor at least). So pardon me while I depart from the norm to complain about pro sports in general, the NHL lockout specifically.

One of these days, I am going to get Mark to write down his musings on the whole lockout situation. On a whole, I don’t care about pro sports. Professional sports don’t seem to have much heart. It’s all about the money and I can watch a game and really only see a bunch of guys going to work. Not to mention the ridiculous situations they manage to escape from unscathed (shooting, wife beating, strangling) I’m fairly certain that I would be fired for any of those acts.

That said, hockey was deeply ingrained in my psyche at an early age so it is difficult for me not to take at least cursory notice. The lockout has been settled and today (at a charity golf tournament, no less) Jeremy Roenick took it upon himself to spout off about the backlash from fans in reaction to the lockout. Roenick repeatedly said in the press conference, that any fans who called players ’spoiled’ could ‘kiss his ass’. He followed with saying he personally had put up 7-8 million dollars to help get the season back on track. Anyone who can afford to throw that out that kind of cash is a little spoiled. He also was blipped out for a ‘f*#& all of you’ … targeted at any fans who were down on the players. And lastly, he offered that fans are just ‘jealous’. Roenick’s message to any fans who dare complain about the players part in the missing NHL season, “We don’t want you at the rink, we don’t want you in the stadium, we don’t want you to watch hockey.”

Seriously, this guy is an ass. He couldn’t come up with more than the ‘you’re just jealous’ retort? That is SO Jerry Springer. Let’s face it, both parties are at fault here. If I had it my way, most of the recent expansion teams would be dumped. Does Nashville really need a hockey team? You should have to get snow to have a team :P Really though, there are too many teams. I don’t quite understand the way the NHL works financially, but it seems wrong to put teams in places where they clearly can’t sustain the fanbase. And while I can understand that the players come to expect certain salaries (not to mention that compared to other professional sports, they seem to make much less), it seems like at some point you need to just get the dang puck on the ice. Sheesh.

Whew. Okay, I promise, no more sports-y talk for at least 6 months.
