Book Drought
i need a new book. my strategy is to always have a book lined up before i am finished with the current one. i am reading East of Eden again and it’s taking me forever because with really excellent reading i like to drag it out as long as possible and savor each word. recent things i have read are:
- The First World War by John Keegan: admittedly, i didn’t finish this book, but definitely plan to since i have enjoyed his style of writing. with everything happening in the world right now, i just didn’t have the heart to read on. i started this book because i was a poor history student at best and got tired of asking Mark “so wait, how did this war start again?”. it sounds idiotic, but i swear we did not cover WWI in depth and i did not specifically select history classes in college (i’m sorry to say).
- Peace Like A River by Leif Enger: i already wrote about it. i’m told, a book club’s wet dream. anyway, i really enjoyed the lyrical style of writing along with breaking the ‘i fought the law, and the law won’ chain.
- Breakfast At Tiffany’s: okay, i haven’t read it lately. but i have read this book cover to cover at least 30 times. it’s my equivalent of comfort food and damnit if you don’t recommend something soon, i swear i’ll read it again. I’LL DO IT!
i’ve really enjoyed The Alienist by Caleb Carr, anything from Haruki Murakami, Taliban: Militant Islan, Oil & Fundamentalism in Central Asia by Ahmed Rashid and anything Raymond Carver. any recommendations are welcome! i’ll read just about anything that is not John Grisham, Stephen King, Mary Higgins Clark-esque. no offense to fans of those authors, it’s meant to characterize my taste in reading.
thanks!

Maybe you’ve already read some Banana Yoshimoto but if not, Kitchen is a cute little book.

i really loved truman capote’s music for chameleons. i just read it again, and it’s still really good short stories. during the fall i love a good short story! if you can find it, i also highly recommend a book called “naive. super” by erland loe. it’s fantastic. another short read, but very enjoyable.
