Before Sunrise
last night i watched Before Sunrise, a movie i have avoided for nine years due to an aversion to the dirty, greasy, scraggly look of Ethan Hawke (didn’t he just play that guy in Reality Bites?). that combined with having watched Richard Linklater’s Slacker was enough to keep me away.
i now see the error of my ways and can’t believe one of my trusted film-buff friends hadn’t given me a proper shake and made me watch. the dialogue is so perfectedly executed and it really captured those rare moments that i believe all people are looking for (whether they know it or not). the ending really accentuated the chemistry of the couple and seemed so much more static without them. needless to say, i really enjoyed it and am looking forward to catching the follow up sometime soon.
of course, i’ll probably end up seeing Some Kind Of Monster first. that’s okay, i’m in the mood for a comedy.

When i saw Slacker back in the day I found it unwatchable, i should go back and watch it now that I live in Austin.

This is one of my favourite films (not just because of the freaky mirroring of my life at the exact time) but because it’s so honest for that age. I really loved Before Sunset because it was the most honest movie I’ve ever seen - it’s hard to believe it’s all made-up.
I have an Ethan Hawke aversion too, but I really like him in these movies; I think he really is Jesse and is so honest in them. Ah, I wonder if we’ll see them in another 9 years?
