has anyone listened to the entire release from Toronto band Girls Are Short? Early North American is out now on Upper Class Recordings, a small Toronto-based indie label.

KEXP has put the song Sunshine from the band’s second album Early North American in their regular rotation. this is their review:

Girlsareshort - Earlynorthamerican (Upper Class)
This Toronto duo’s second album is a fun, blissed-out set of quirky electro-pop, combining percolating electronic beats and occasional rock guitars with sunny bubblegum synth melodies and some endearingly amateurish singing, along with plenty of playful vocal samples, including lots of frolicking kiddies. - Don Yates

i can’t always get into cute-sy electro pop, but i have to admit that i find myself listening for this song to be played. i do love Le Tigre after all. and while Kathleen Hanna can hardly be labeled as cute, some of the synth sounds on their albums can be a bit precious. but, i could never quite get into Stereo Total’s fifth album Musique Automatique (it’s the only one i tried). if anyone has heard all of Early North American, please leave a comment on what you think.

  1. among all the great things that Kathleen Hanna is, i would definitely add “cute” to the list.

  2. gosh that sounds awfully appealing to me too… i hope somebody can weigh in. hmm, or maybe it should just go on the ol’ Amazon wishlist.

  3. i’m going to buy it hopefully this evening, so i will let you know how it is as a whole!

  4. I have a copy of EarlyNorthAmerican and really like it.
