Random Thought

Posted on Sunday, November 9, 2003 in thoughts

since both our home computers are macs, i haven’t ever used Typepad on a pc. i tried it out the other day at work, just out of curiosity really and found that there are some little tools to help with posting that i don’t see via safari (like links, quotes, etc.). not that it matters since i add those myself anyway. but it was interesting anyway. interesting like “oh, that’s different … huh? oh yes, i need some coffee!”

Spiritualized

Posted on Sunday, November 9, 2003 in sonica

the in-studio performance was really amazing, the sound is always incredible there. it was such a bonus to see spiritualized stripped down with only a handful of other people present. the show is already archived online and can be heard the following way:

- go to KEXP
- click on the stream archive tab
- search by host, look for Jack Walters and select November 8, 2003
- choose your bandwidth and your off!

At The Hotel Yorba

Posted on Friday, November 7, 2003 in thoughts

Well its 1 2 3 4
take the elevator
at the hotel yorba
I’ll be glad to see you later
all they got inside is vacancy

although the detroit area is no longer my home, i still have a love/hate relationship with it. and every now and then i feel compelled to peruse The Fabulous Ruins of Detroit to muse over the sadness of what is Detroit today. don’t get me wrong, there are still good things about the city, for the most part … the people. the site is comprehensive and if you haven’t got the time to peruse all 800 pages, you can keep clicking the ‘express’ button for an abbreviated library of pictures of the architectural history of Detroit. notable are:

} the expansive Packard Motors panorama (once the home of hundreds of employees and more recently the home of infamous parties/raves with the best DJs around)
} The Michigan Theatre … did you see 8 Mile?
} theHudson’s Building where my mother worked as a girl and was locked in during the riots
} Belle Isle, an island in the midst of the Detroit River. when i was younger, there was an aquarium, planetarium, horse back riding and believe it or not there are actually still lots of deer there. i spent every christmas day driving through and feeding the deer.

there’s not a picture of the Hotel Yorba, but i passed it everyday on the way to work and always wondered what it looked like inside. i miss seeing shows at Alvin’s Twilight Bar, coffee and techno at Zoot’s and browsing at John K King Books. but, not the snow and ice. i don’t miss the snow and ice.

Everyday With You Is Like Friday

ack! this was my response after installing Microsoft Office 2003 and launching Outlook 2003 for the first time. it’s nice that it’s blue, but i am not sure the interface changes were all for the better. and the reality is, i don’t want to spend all day slicing and dicing my mail. anti-trust marches on. finally though, they added an enhancement so that you could configure and tie signatures to specific accounts. praise jebus.

aahhh! tomorrow at 3pm(PST) i have the good fortune of seeing Spiritualized in the intimate leopard lounge studio of KEXP (yep, that’s right, i mentioned that station AGAIN!). luckily, they will have the entire show webcasted live and later it will be archived on the site to listen at your leisure (pronounced le-zher).

The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock

Posted on Sunday, November 2, 2003 in other people's writing

“I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think that they will sing to me”

-excerpt from The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock by T.S. Eliot, 1917

Visit Salon.com for a downloadable MP3 of T.S. Eliot reading his well known poem.

“Listen to this eloquent rendition of “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” in which Eliot conveys the frustration and irony of this notable poem. Taken from the HarperAudio release “T.S. Eliot Reads.”

a poem a day keeps the mean reds away.

The Proof Is In The Pudding

Posted on Sunday, November 2, 2003 in thoughts

often times it is difficult to discern the rhetoric that floods the media during political campaigns. my approach has always been to absorb as much information as possible to enable the best decision i can make (the key being as much information as possible). it may seem glaringly obvious, but reading up on what the current administration is saying helps me move towards a decision. links have been added for the White House, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. the usefulness, for me at least, in these sites is not just that they contain information that may not have been a good sound byte for the news, but also contain complete transcripts of interviews, speeches, etc. take, for example, this transcript of Deputy Secretary of Defense, Paul Wolfowitz, speaking at Georgetown University. make your own judgements off of the unedited for TV versions of what political figures say when you can!
